Punjabi Suba movement

The Punjabi Suba movement aimed at creation of a Punjabi-majority subah ("province") in the Punjab region of India in the 1950s. Led by the Akali Dal, it resulted in the formation of the Punjabi-majority Punjab state, the Hindi-majority Haryana state and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Some Pahari majority parts of the East Punjab were also merged with Himachal Pradesh as a result of the movement.

Ladhowal train fire

The Ladhowal rail disaster on 15 May 2003, was an flash fire which began at 4am on the Frontier Mail train service in India, and engulfed three carriages before it could be extinguished. 39 people lost their lives and another 15 were hospitalised with severe burns. The train service from Mumbai to Amritsar, had just passed the station at Ludhiana and was approaching Ladhowal, travelling at over 100km/h. Eyewitness A. D.

Ludhiana

Ludhiana Punjabi: ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ is a city and a municipal corporation in Ludhiana district in the Indian state of Punjab. It is the largest city in the state, with an estimated population of 1,613,878 in 2011. The population increases substantially during the crop harvesting season due to migration of labourers from states like eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and Delhi. It has an area of about 310 km². The city stands on the Sutlej River's old bank, 13 km south of its present course.
