Following the creation of the new Batubara Regency (which was carved out of Asahan Regency on 15 June 2007), the regency now covers an area of 3,675.79 square kilometres and according to the 2010 census had a population of 667,563 people. Its seat is Kisaran. The Asahan Sultanate was located in the region.

Dairi Regency

Dairi Regency is a regency on the northwest shore of Lake Toba in North Sumatra. In 2000, the regency covered an area of 1,927 square kilometres square kilometres and according to the 2000 census had a population of 271,983 people. Its seat is Sidikalang. Just immediately south is Samosir Regency and Pakpak Bharat Regency.
