Battle of Cerignola

The Battle of Cerignola was fought on April 28, 1503, between Spanish and French armies, in Cerignola, near Bari in Southern Italy. Spanish forces, under Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, formed by 6,300 men, including 2,000 landsknechts, with more than 1,000 arquebusiers, and 20 cannon, defeated the French who had 9,000 men; mainly heavy gendarme cavalry and Swiss mercenary pikemen, with about 40 cannon, and led by Louis d'Armagnac, Duke of Nemours, who was killed.

456th Bombardment Group

Activated in June 1943 as a heavy bombardment group. Trained with B-24 Liberators for duty overseas. Moved to Italy, December 1943 – January 1944. Began combat with Fifteenth Air Force in February 1944, operating chiefly against strategic targets until late in April 1945. Early operations included attacks against such objectives as marshalling yards, aircraft factories, railroad bridges, and airdromes in Italy, Austria, and Rumania.

The Locone is an Italian river in whose source is near Spinazzola in the province of Bari. From there, the river flows north and forms the border between the province of Bari and the province of Potenza for a short distance. The river is then joined by a tributary flowing from the province of Potenza before entering the Ofanto.

Carapelle (river)

The Carapelle is an Italian river whose source is north of Anzano di Puglia in the province of Foggia in Apulia. The river's source is near the border with the province of Avellino in Campania in the Appennino Napoletano Mountains. It curves eastward and flowing past Accadia before being joined by the Calaggio. The river then turns northeast and is joined by the Carapellotto before flowing past Ordona and Carapelle.
