Rapido (river)

The Rapido is a short river (c.40 km) which flows in the Italian province of Frosinone. Its source is close to border between Lazio and Molise on the slopes of the Mainarde mountains. The river bathes the district of Sant'Elia Fiumerapido after which it becomes known as the Gari and near Cassino it joins with the Liri to form the Garigliano. Fed by numerous karstic springs, the river has a relatively high and reliable discharge: 25 m³/s on average and never dropping below 10 m³/s.

Garigliano Nuclear Power Plant

Garigltiano Nuclear Power Plant was a nuclear power plant located at Sessa Aurunca, in southern Italy. It was named after the river Garigliano. Consisting of one 150MWe BWR, it operated from 1964 until 1982. First criticality was on 5 June 1963, with grid connection 1 January 1964 and full commercial operation from 1 June in that year. Final shutdown was 1 March 1982.

Monte Cassino

For information about the World War II battle, see Battle of Monte Cassino. Monte Cassino is a rocky hill about 130 kilometres southeast of Rome, Italy, c. 2 kilometres to the west of the town of Cassino (the Roman Casinum having been on the hill) and 520 m altitude. St. Benedict of Nursia established his first monastery, the source of the Benedictine Order, here around 529. It was the site of Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944.

Battle of Monte Cassino

The Battle of Monte Cassino (also known as the Battle for Rome and the Battle for Cassino) was a costly series of four assaults by the Allies against the Winter Line in Italy held by the Germans and Italians during the Italian Campaign of World War II. The intention was a breakthrough to Rome. At the beginning of 1944, the western half of the Winter Line was being anchored by Germans holding the Rapido, Liri and Garigliano valleys and some of the surrounding peaks and ridges.

Monte la Difensa

The battle for Monte La Difensa, which took place between 3 December and 9 December 1943, occurred during Operation Raincoat, part of the Battle for the Bernhardt Line during the Italian Campaign in World War II. Monte La Difensa, (also known as Hill 960) was one of the peaks forming the Camino hill mass which formed the left-hand "gatepost" dominating the Mignano Gap, key to the Allied Fifth Army's route to Cassino and the Liri valley and thence to Rome.
