A ancient church on the site, built at least by the 7th century, previously was called San Giusto in Botro, built over the tombs of Saints Giusto and Clemente . Construction of the present stone church was begun on October 28, 1628, based on designs by the architect Giovanni Coccapani, which were carried out by his pupil Ludovico Incontri. The church was finally consecreated in 1775.

Baptistery of San Giovanni (Volterra)
The Baptistery of San Giovanni an octagonal 13th century religious building standing just in front of the Duomo of Volterra, in the center of the city. It was supposedly set up in the seventh century at the site of a Roman Temple dedicated to Sun worship. Only one of the sides has been furnished with green and white marble. The Romanesque Portal has been attributed to a follower of Nicola Pisano.
