The 2002 Molise earthquake was a magnitude 5.9 earthquake that hit the Italian regions of Molise and Puglia on October 31, 2002 at 10:32:58 (UTC). The depth of the earthquake was 10.0 km . Most of the victims of the earthquake suffered when a school collapsed in the town of San Giuliano di Puglia. 26 of the 51 pupils there died, together with one of their teachers. In particular, none of the 9 children of the 4th class (born in 1996) survived.

The Monti Dauni (also known as Subappennino Dauno or Monti della Daunia) area a mountain chain in southern Italy, constituting the eastern appendix of the Campanian Apennines. They occupy the eastern fringe of Capitanata and the border of Apulia with Molise, and take their name from the ancient Dauni Italic tribe. They are bounded northwards by the Fortore valley, eastwards by the Tavoliere delle Puglie, southwards by the upper Ofanto valley.
