European Gravitational Observatory

The European Gravitational Observatory or EGO is located in the countryside near Pisa in the Comune of Cascina. In order to ensure the long term scientific exploitation of the VIRGO interferometric antenna for gravitational waves detection as well as to foster European collaboration in this upcoming field, the VIRGO funding institutions have created a consortium called EGO (European Gravitational Observatory). VIRGO is a 3 kilometer interferometer built through a French-Italian collaboration.

Virgo interferometer

The Virgo is a gravitational wave detector in Italy, which commenced operations in 2007. It is one of a handful of the world's major experiments working towards the observation of gravitational waves. Virgo is a massive Michelson laser interferometer made of two orthogonal arms, each three kilometers long. Multiple reflections between mirrors located at the extremities of each arm extend the effective optical length of each arm up to 120 kilometers.

Pisa International Airport

San Pietro a Grado

San Piero a Grado is a church in Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, in the eponymous frazione. The church is located where once was a now disappeared port of the Pisan Republic, where, according to the legend, St. Peter landed in Italy from Antiochia in 44 AD.

Santo Sepolcro (Pisa)

The Church of the Santo Sepolcro is a religious edifice in Pisa, Tuscany, Italy. Built in the early 12th century (it is known at least from 1113), it was designed by Diotisalvi, who also designed the Baptistery of Pisa Cathedral forty years later. It has an octagonal plan and, until the 16th century, it was surrounded by a portico. The central tambour, supported by eight ogival arches, is super-elevated and is surmounted by a conic cusp.
