Monte Cassino

For information about the World War II battle, see Battle of Monte Cassino. Monte Cassino is a rocky hill about 130 kilometres southeast of Rome, Italy, c. 2 kilometres to the west of the town of Cassino (the Roman Casinum having been on the hill) and 520 m altitude. St. Benedict of Nursia established his first monastery, the source of the Benedictine Order, here around 529. It was the site of Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944.

Battle of Monte Cassino

The Battle of Monte Cassino (also known as the Battle for Rome and the Battle for Cassino) was a costly series of four assaults by the Allies against the Winter Line in Italy held by the Germans and Italians during the Italian Campaign of World War II. The intention was a breakthrough to Rome. At the beginning of 1944, the western half of the Winter Line was being anchored by Germans holding the Rapido, Liri and Garigliano valleys and some of the surrounding peaks and ridges.

Battle of San Germano

The Battle of San Germano (or the Battle of Mignano) was the final battle in the Neapolitan War between an Austrian force commanded by Laval Nugent von Westmeath and the King of Naples, Joachim Murat. The battle started on 15 May 1815 and ended on 17 May, after the remaining Neapolitan force was routed at Mignano. Following his defeat at the Battle of Tolentino, Murat had fallen back to San Germano, now Cassino.
