In 1944, it was the site of a notorious Nazi atrocity during World War II. The village was only partially rebuilt after the war. The Sant'Anna di Stazzema massacre was a Nazi German atrocity in the hill village of Sant'Anna di Stazzema, Italy, in the course of an operation against the Italian resistance movement during the Italian Campaign of World War II. On August 12, 1944, about 560 local villagers and refugees were murdered and their bodies burnt in a scorched earth policy action by the German occupation forces of the Waffen-SS.

Torre del Lago is a town of almost 11,000 inhabitants, a frazione of the comune of Viareggio, in the province of Lucca, Tuscany, Italy, between the Lake of Massaciuccoli and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Festival Puccini, an annual opera festival which attracts around 40,000 attendees, is held in its open-air theatre, a short distance from the Villa where opera composer Giacomo Puccini lived and worked. He is buried in a small chapel inside the Villa.
