Territorial Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore

The Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore is a large Benedictine monastery in the Italian region of Tuscany, 10 km south of Asciano. Its buildings, which are mostly of red brick, are conspicuous against the grey clayey and sandy soil—the Crete senesi which give this area of Tuscany its name. It is a territorial abbey whose abbot functions as the bishop of the land within the abbey's possession, even though he is not consecrated as a bishop.

Arbia

The Arbia is a torrent in Tuscany, central Italy, an affluence of the Ombrone river. Its source is located in the comune of Castellina in Chianti, at 620 m of altitude. it flows into the Ombrone near Buonconvento. The rivers is mentioned by Dante in his Divine Comedy, its waters getting "colored of red" (Inferno, Canto X, verse 86) in the wake of the Battle of Montaperti between Florence and Siena.

Accona Desert

The Accona Desert is a semi-arid area in Tuscany, Italy, in the center of the so-called Crete senesi, in the west and the south of the comune of Asciano. It is characterized by calanques and dome-shaped formations locally known as biancane (deriving from Italian bianco, white, due to their light shade). Due to yearly rain amounting to no more than 600 mm, cultivations take advantage of a large irrigation system. The desert houses the medieval abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.

Crete Senesi

The Crete Senesi refers to an area of the Italian region of Tuscany to the south of Siena. It consists of a range of hills and woods among villages and includes the comuni of Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d'Arbia, Rapolano Terme and San Giovanni d'Asso, all within the province of Siena. Crete senesi are literally ‘Senese clays’, and the distinctive grey colouration of the soil gives the landscape an appearance often described as lunar.
