Ueno, Gunma is a village located in Tano District, Gunma, Japan. As of 2003, the village had an estimated population of 2,152 and a density of 11.83 persons per km². The total area is 181.86 km². In Ueno there is a shrine, Irei-no-Sono, commemorating the Japan Airlines Flight 123 accident and containing the cremated unidentified remains of some of the victims.

Japan Airlines Flight 123 was a Japan Airlines domestic flight from Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) to Osaka International Airport (Itami). On Monday, August 12, 1985, the Boeing 747SR that made this route, registered JA8119, suffered mechanical failures 12 minutes into the flight and 32 minutes later crashed into two ridges of Mount Takamagahara in Ueno, Gunma Prefecture, 100 kilometers from Tokyo. The crash site was on Osutaka Ridge, near Mount Osutaka.

Mount Takamagahara
Mount Takamagahara (高天原山, Takamagahara-yama) is a mountain in the Gunma Prefecture of Japan, near Ueno village. Its measurement is 1,978.6 metres tall. The crash of Japan Airlines Flight 123 was initially reported on Mount Osutaka, but later confirmed to be on the ridge of Mount Takamagahara at a height of approximately 1,565 metres above sea level. This area was later renamed as Osutaka no One ("Mountain Ridge of Mount Osutaka") by the village mayor of Ueno, Takeo Kurosawa.
