Tokunoshima

is an island in the Amami Islands of southwestern Japan. Administratively it belongs to Kagoshima Prefecture. Three towns are located on the island: Tokunoshima, Isen, and Amagi. It is about halfway between Kagoshima on the southern end of Kyūshū and Okinawa's main island. It is home to a deadly snake known as the habu (which exists on several other islands), a rare and prehistoric black rabbit, and a unique form of bullfighting called Tōgyū.

Tokunoshima, Kagoshima

Tokunoshima, Kagoshima is a town in Ōshima District, Kagoshima, Japan. It is located on the island of Tokunoshima. As of 2008, it has an estimated population of 12,656 and the density of 121 persons per km². The total area of the city is 104.87 km². Shigechiyo Izumi (June 29, 1865 – February 21, 1986) is the person with the second longest recorded human lifespan in history, after Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment. He was born in Tokunoshima and died at the age of 120 years 237 days.

Toyama Maru

Toyama Maru (富山丸) was a 7,089-ton Japanese troop transport during World War II. On June 29, 1944, Toyama Maru was transporting over 6,000 men of the Japanese 44th Independent Mixed Brigade when she was torpedoed and sunk by the submarine USS Sturgeon in the Nansei Shoto, off Taira Jima, Japan, at position 27º47´N, 129º05´E. There were only about 600 survivors, making the sinking of the Toyama Maru one of the worst maritime disasters in history.
