Saryshaghan
Saryshaghan is a town in Kazakhstan located on the coast of Lake Balkhash at Latitude (DMS): 46° 7' 9 N Longitude (DMS): 73° 37' 9 E in Qaraghandy Province. Its population is estimated at 11,000 inhabitants. Sary Shagan is a site of the major antiballistic missile defense test range in the Soviet Union. The first nonnuclear intercept of a ballistic missile warhead by a missile was accomplished there on 4 March 1961.

Dnestr radar and Dnepr radar are the first generation of Soviet space surveillance and early warning radar. They are phased array radar systems designed to give early warning of attack from ballistic missiles. Balkhash Radar Station (also described as Sary Shagan radar node and Balkhash-9) is the site of two generations of Soviet and Russian early warning radars. It is located on the west coast of Lake Balkhash near Sary Shagan test site in Kazakhstan. Although it is used for monitoring satellites in low Earth orbit it is mainly a key part of the Russian system of warning against missile attack.
