Pyuntaza is a small town located in Bago Division, Myanmar. It is about 322 km (200 mi) from Bago (formerly Pegu). The dominant ethnic group is Bamar, although there is a substantial number of Hokkien-speaking Chinese. The town's main economy consists of rice cultivation and distribution.

1930 Pyu earthquake

The 1930 Pyu earthquake occurred on December 3, 1930 at 18:51 UTC . The epicenter was located north to Bago, Burma, then part of British India. The magnitude of the earthquake was put at Mw 7.3, or Ms 7.3. Before the earthquake, a tremor occurred at 16:36 UTC, and its shaking was felt much milder in Yangon. 36 deaths were reported in the earthquake. The earthquake caused severe damage to Pyu, about 130 km north of Bago. Many of the masonry buildings in Pyu were wrecked.
