Giethoorn used to be a carfree town known in the Netherlands as "Venice of the North" or "Venice of the Netherlands". It became locally famous, especially after 1958, when the Dutch film maker Bert Haanstra made his famous comedy "Fanfare" there.

Baarlo, Steenwijkerland
Baarlo is a small village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality Steenwijkerland, about 1 km northwest of the city of Blokzijl. Until the Noordoostpolder was reclaimed, the village lay on the dyke of the IJsselmeer. According to the 19th century historian A.J. van der Aa, it had about 120 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century. It was also called "Kuinderdijk en Baarlo" then.
