Dalem, Netherlands

Dalem is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is located in the municipality of Gorinchem, about 2 km east of the city. Dalem was a separate municipality until 1818, when it was renamed to "Vuren", the name of the other village in the municipality. The village was part of the province of Gelderland until 1986, when the municipality of Vuren ceased to exist, and Dalem became part of Gorinchem, thereby becoming part of the province of South Holland.

Afgedamde Maas

The Afgedamde Maas is a former distributary of the Maas River in the Dutch province of North Brabant. The Maas splits near Heusden with one channel flowing north until its confluence with the river Waal (the main distributary of the river Rhine) to form the Merwede, while the other continues west as the main distributary of the Maas.

Loevestein

Castle Loevestein (Slot Loevestein in Dutch) is a medieval castle built by the knight Dirc Loef van Horne (hence "Loef's stein" house) between 1357 and 1397. Until the Second World War Loevestein Castle was part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, the main Dutch defense line that was based on flooding an area of land south and east of the western provinces. Currently the castle is used as a medieval museum and function centre.
