Nieuwlande, Zeeland

Nieuwlande is a drowned village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It was located 500 metres from the dike of the present-day Zuid-Beveland, north of Krabbendijke. The small remaining part of the former domain of Nieuwlande was a separate municipality until 1816, when it was merged with Krabbendijke.

Maire, Netherlands

Maire (also Meere or Mare) is a former village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It was located northwest of the village of Rilland. The church of Maire was mentioned in 1284. The village suffered from a number of floods, and on November 5, 1530, it drowned completely. When it was flooded again on November 2, 1532, it was abandoned completely. A small part of the area was reclaimed from the sea in 1694, but the village was never rebuilt.

Battle of Reimerswaal

The naval Battle of Reimerswaal took place on 29 January 1574 during the Eighty Years' War between a Dutch and a Spanish fleet. The Dutch were victorious. In April 1572 the cities of Flushing, Veere and Arnemuiden, located on the island of Walcheren, swore allegiance to the Dutch prince. However, another city on the island, Middelburg, remained loyal to the king of Spain, and as a result was laid siege upon.
