Lake Mahinerangi

Lake Mahinerangi is a small lake formed when a dam was built on the Waipori River for hydroelectric generation. The lake is 35 kilometres to the west of Dunedin in New Zealand's South Island. The Waipori hydro-electric scheme includes a network of four dams and power stations and produces a maximum output of 84 MW. The lake was named for Dorothy Kathleen Mahinerangi Burnett, the daughter of William Burnett, mayor of Dunedin 1911-1912.

Berwick Forest, New Zealand

Berwick Forest is a large Pinus radiata plantation at Berwick in New Zealand, around 40 km west of Dunedin. The forest lies close to the banks of the Waipori River immediately below and around the western end of Lake Mahinerangi, and consists of three blocks - the main block, Maungatua, and Waitahuna, with a total area of 13,141 hectares.

Gabriel's Gully

Gabriel's Gully is a locality in Otago, New Zealand, three kilometres from Lawrence township and close to the Tuapeka River. The discovery of gold at Gabriel's Gully by Gabriel Read in May 1861 led to the Central Otago goldrush. While gold had been found in the Otago before, this rush was beyond expectation, with the population of the gold field rising from almost nothing to around 11,500 within a year, twice that of Dunedin at the time. It also stimulated overseas interest in the new colony.
