Ballantyne's fire
The Ballantyne's fire on 18 November 1947 remains the deadliest fire in New Zealand history. 41 people died in the blaze in the Christchurch Central City; all were employees who found themselves trapped by the fire or were overcome by smoke while evacuating the store complex without a fire alarm or evacuation plan.

Christchurch Art Gallery
The Christchurch Art Gallery, with the formal name of Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, is the public art gallery of the city of Christchurch, New Zealand. It is funded by Christchurch City Council. It has its own substantial art collection and presents a programme of New Zealand and international exhibitions. The gallery opened on 10 May 2003, replacing the city's former public art gallery, the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, which opened on 16 June 1932 and closed on 16 June 2002.

Centre of Contemporary Art
The Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA, formerly the Canterbury Society of Arts Gallery) is an art gallery in the central city of Christchurch, New Zealand. The gallery specialises in the exhibition, sale, valuation, and hire of New Zealand art, as well as offering educational services and advice on fine art. Exhibitions at the gallery change every three weeks, work by over 400 artists has been exhibited every year.

Hack Circle
The Hack Circle or Hack was a nickname given to an amphitheatre in central Christchurch, New Zealand. It was built as part of the second phase of developing a pedestrian mall in the central city in 1989 and was officially opened on 6 December of that same year by then mayor Vicki Buck. For a time it was a popular Hacky Sack venue (hence the name), later it became a popular hang out for "black-dressed emos, goths, heavy metal fans and United States style gangstas".

Townsend Observatory
Townsend Observatory, owned and administered by the University of Canterbury, was part of the Arts Centre of Christchurch, New Zealand and was open on clear Friday evenings from 8pm - 10.30pm, March to October (winter months between daylight saving). The observatory was destroyed, and its historic Cooke 6" refractor telescope damaged when the part of the Arts Centre housing them collapsed as a result of the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake.
