Bjorøy Tunnel

The Bjorøy Tunnel is a 2,012-metre long subsea road tunnel connecting Bjorøy in Fjell to the mainland at Hilleren in Bergen, Norway. A part of Hordaland County Road 207, it crosses underneath Vatlestraumen, reaching 88 metres below mean sea level. It serves as a fixed link for 500 people on Bjorøy and Tyssøy, in addition to a similar number of cottage owners. The first proposal was launched in 1980, and construction started on 29 September 1993.

Haakonsvern

Haakonsvern is the main base of the Royal Norwegian Navy and the largest naval base in the Nordic area. The base is located at Mathopen within Bergen municipality, about 15 km south-west of the city centre. Around 5,400 people work at the base as conscripts, officers or civilian staff. The base was established in 1962 when the main naval activities were moved from Horten in the Oslofjord to Bergen.

Helmuth Brinkmann

Helmuth Brinkmann (12 March 1895 – 26 September 1983) was a Vice Admiral in the Kriegsmarine during World War II who captained the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. Prior to World War II he commanded the Aviso Grille, Adolf Hitler's state yacht. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes). The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership.
