The Knarrlagsundet bridge connects the two islands. The island is home to the villages of Knarrlagsund and Ulvan. Marine Harvest has a fish processing plant in Ulvan.

The village of Nordbotn on the island of Fjellværsøya lies about 7 kilometres to the west. The 1-square-kilometre island is connected to the island of Storfosna by a 1-kilometre long causeway with a 600-metre long bridge in the middle of it. The island is home to agriculture and fish processing.
