The narrow Saltstraumen strait connects the Saltfjorden to the large, inland Skjerstadfjorden.

The church is part of the Valnesfjord parish in the Salten deanery in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland. The white wooden church was completed in 1905, and it was consecrated on 14 June 1905 the Bishop Peter Wilhelm Bøckman. The church seats about 315 people.

Skjerstad Church is a parish church in the municipality of Bodø in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Skjerstad, along the Skjerstadfjorden. The church is part of the Misvær og Skjerstad parish in the Bodø deanery in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland. The white, stone and concrete church was built in 1959, and it was designed by Arnstein Arneberg. The church seats about 500 people. The church was built to replace an earlier, larger church built in 1877.
