Telegraph Island

Telegraph Island (also known as Jazirat al Maqlab) is situated in the Elphinstone Inlet, about a mile off the shore of the Musandam Peninsula, which is part of the sultanate of Oman. The inlet is a fjord surrounded by high mountains, with notable geology in the rock strata which dip downwards under the immense pressures caused by the Arabian tectonic plate meeting the Eurasian plate.

Quoin Island (Persian Gulf)

Quoin Island (also known as As Salamah Island and Great Quoin Island) in Oman is the traditional "way point" used by ships to define the entrance or exit from the Persian Gulf. Once a ship is declaired a position of "Passed Quoin Inbound" the insurance rates for the ship will increase. Quoin Island, Oman, is not to be confused with Quoin Island, Yemen, which is in the Red Sea and also has a lighthouse, or Quoin Island in the Torres Strait of Australia, neither of which are way points.

Khasab

Khasab is a city in an exclave of Oman. It is the local capital of the Musandam peninsula. Khasab is located 500 kilometers (310 mi) from Muscat and is dubbed the "Norway of Arabia". The Portuguese built Khasab at the beginning of the 17th century at the height of their naval presence in the region. The natural harbor gave shelter from tough seas.

Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz /hɔrˈmuːz/ Persian: تَنگِه هُرمُز‎ Tangeh-ye Hormoz, Arabic: مَضيق هُرمُز‎ Maḍīq Hurmuz) is a strait between the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. It is the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is one of the world's most strategically important choke points. On the north coast is Iran, and on the south coast is the United Arab Emirates and Musandam, an exclave of Oman. At its narrowest, the strait is 21 nautical miles wide.
