2002 Burica earthquake

The 2002 Burica earthquake occurred on July 30, 2002 at 19:16 local time off the coast of Panama. It had a magnitude of Mw 6.5. The epicenter was located off the southeastern coast of Burica Peninsula, close to the Costa Rica-Panama border. At least 12 houses collapsed. 8 people were reported injured, 3 in Panama and 5 in Costa Rica. The strongest intensity reached MM VII in Puerto Armuelles, Panama. It was felt with MM III to IV around San Jose, Costa Rica.

Puerto Armuelles, Chiriquí

Puerto Armuelles is a city on Panama's Pacific Coast in the western province of Chiriquí Province next to Costa Rica. Puerto Armuelles is the second largest city in Chiriqui province with a population near 25,000, and has not one, but two different type of deep-water ports, one for Bananas and one for oil. Puerto Armuelles is just 5 miles from the border with Costa Rica as the crow flies yet the actual border crossing lies 21 miles away.
