Gatun structure

The Gatun structure is a possible eroded impact crater. It is named after the nearby Gatun Lake in Panama. It was first discovered in 1972 by geologist Bob Stewart and later studied by Livio L. Tornabene from the University of South Florida Department of Geology. The structure is estimated to have formed about 20 million years ago. This would place the event in the Miocene epoch.

Panama Canal Zone

The Panama Canal Zone (Spanish: Zona del Canal de Panamá) is a 553-square-mile former unorganized US territory located within the Republic of Panama, consisting of the Panama Canal and an area generally extending {{#invoke:ConvertNumeric | numeral_to_english | 5 | case=L | sp=us | adj=off }} miles on each side of the centerline, but excluding Panama City and Colón, which otherwise would have been partly within the limits of the Canal Zone.

Panama Canal

The Panama Canal (Spanish: Canal de Panamá) is a {{#invoke:Math|precision_format| (77.1)*1,000/1,609.344 | 0}}-mile (77.1 km) ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake . The Gatun Lake was used to reduce the amount of work required for a sea-level connection.

Culebra Cut

The Culebra Cut, formerly called Gaillard Cut, is an artificial valley that cuts through the continental divide in Panama. The cut forms part of the Panama Canal, linking Gatun Lake, and thereby the Atlantic Ocean, to the Gulf of Panama and hence the Pacific Ocean. It is 12.6 km (7.8 mi) from the Pedro Miguel lock on the Pacific side to the Chagres River arm of Lake Gatun, with a water level 26 m (85 ft) above sea level.

Gamboa, Panama

Gamboa is a small town in the Republic of Panama. It was one of a handful of permanent Canal Zone townships, built to house employees of the Panama Canal and their dependents. The name Gamboa is the name of a tree of the quince family.
