Basilan is geographically located between latitude 6°15' and 7°00' longitude 121°15' and 122°30'. Basilan is one of a system of 7,107 islands that make up the Philippine archipelago. Its capital, Isabela City, is administered as part of the Zamboanga Peninsula Region. Basilan is home to three main ethnic groups, the indigenous Yakans, and the later-arriving Tausugs and Zamboangueño.

According to the 2007 census, it has a population of 58,423 people. 12 barangays that were not on Basilan Island seceded to form the municipality of Tabuan-Lasa by virtue of Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act No. 187, which was subsequently ratified in a plebiscite held on March 29, 2008.
