Głogów

Głogów is a town in southwestern Poland. It is the county seat of Głogów County, in Lower Silesian Voivodeship (as of 1999), and was previously in Legnica Voivodeship (1975–1998). It is also the administrative seat of Gmina Głogów, although it is not part of its territory (the town forms a separate urban gmina). Głogów is the sixth largest town in the voivodeship; according to the 2004 census estimate the town had a total population of 71,686.

Głogów County

Głogów County is a unit of territorial administration and local government in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, south-western Poland. It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. The county covers an area of 443.06 square kilometres . Its administrative seat and only town is Głogów. As at 2006 the total population of the county is 87,651, of which the population of the town of Głogów is 68,954 and the rural population is 18,697.

Battle of Głogów

The Battle of Głogów or Defense of Głogów was fought on 24 August 1109 at the Silesian town of Głogów, between the Kingdom of Poland and the Holy Roman Empire. Recorded by the medieval chronicler Gallus Anonymus it is presently one of the most well known battles in Polish history. The Polish forces were led by Duke Bolesław III Wrymouth, while the Imperial forces were under command of King Henry V of Germany. Bolesław was victorious.

Modła, Głogów County

Modła is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Jerzmanowa, within Głogów County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in south-western Poland. Prior to 1945 it was in Germany. It lies approximately 4 kilometres north of Jerzmanowa, 5 km south-west of Głogów, and 90 km north-west of the regional capital Wrocław.

Smardzów, Głogów County

Smardzów is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Jerzmanowa, within Głogów County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in south-western Poland. Prior to 1945 it was in Germany. It lies approximately 2 kilometres north-east of Jerzmanowa, 6 km south of Głogów, and 87 km north-west of the regional capital Wrocław. According to Jankowski, Smardzów (also Smarzewo) was registered as Szwedowo in 1507 (at the old Duchy of Głogów).
