Mafra, Portugal

Mafra is a town in Mafra Municipality in Portugal. The town (2002 pop. 11,080) is 28 km north-west from the center of Lisbon. It is mostly known for the sumptuous Palácio de Mafra (Mafra Palace), which also makes it a popular tourist destination in the Lisbon area. Built in the baroque style, the Mafra National Palace also inspired Portuguese Nobel Prize laureate José Saramago to write his novel Baltasar and Blimunda (Memorial do Convento).

Mafra National Palace

The Mafra National Palace is a monumental Baroque and Italianized Neoclassical palace-monastery located in Mafra, Portugal, some 28 kilometres from Lisbon. The palace, which also served as a Franciscan monastery, was built during the reign of King John V (1707–1750), in consequence of a vow made by the king in 1711, who promised to build a convent if his wife, the Queen Mary Anne of Austria, gave him descendants.

Roman bridge at Catribana

Roman bridge, located in the village of Catribana, crossing over the Samarra river. The bridge is composed of a single arch and parapet, with several restorations and changes over the centuries. Probably it was part of a secondary Roman road that connected the several villa of the Olisipo region. Remains of a Roman road, necropolis and some mosaics and ceramic fragments were also found nearby.

Tapada Nacional de Mafra

The Tapada Nacional de Mafra was created in Mafra, Portugal, during the reign of king João V, following the building of the Mafra National Palace, as a park for royal and court recreation. Covering over 8 square kilometres, the park holds different species of deer, wild boar, foxes, birds of prey and many others coexisting in an unusually rich and diversified natural habitat.
