Sestra River is a river in Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast, Russia. The length of the river is 74 km (46 mi). The area of its basin is 393 km² (152 mi²). The Sestra River flows over the Karelian Isthmus. It used to fall into the Gulf of Finland until the early 18th century.

Karelian Isthmus

The Karelian Isthmus is the approximately 45–110 km wide stretch of land, situated between the Gulf of Finland and Lake Ladoga in northwestern Russia, to the north of the River Neva (between 61°21’N, 59°46’N and 27°42’E, 31°08’E). Its northwestern boundary is the relatively narrow area between the Bay of Vyborg and Lake Ladoga.

North Ingria

The Republic of North Ingria or Republic of Kirjasalo was a short-lived state of Ingrian Finns in the southern part of the Karelian Isthmus, which seceded from Bolshevist Russia after the October Revolution. Its aim was to be incorporated into Finland. It ruled parts of Ingria from 1919 until 1920. With the Peace Treaty of Tartu it was re-integrated into Russia.

Pervomayskoye, Leningrad Oblast

Pervomayskoye is a rural locality (a logging depot settlement) in Vyborgsky District of Leningrad Oblast, Russia, located on the Karelian Isthmus, 60 kilometers northwest of St.  Petersburg. It serves as the administrative center of Pervomayskoye Settlement Municipal Formation—an administrative division of the district—as well as of Pervomayskoye Rural Settlement, which that administrative division is municipally incorporated as. Population: 4,469; 4,496.

Shelling of Mainila

The Shelling of Mainila was a military incident on November 26, 1939, where the Soviet Union's Red Army shelled the Russian village of Mainila, declared that the fire originated from Finland across a nearby border and claimed losses in personnel. Through that false flag operation the Soviet Union gained a great propaganda boost and a casus belli for launching the Winter War four days later.
