Luostari/Pechenga

Luostari Pechenga, located just two kilometres of former Ala-Luostari village, adjacent to the village developed around Petsamo (Petshenga) Monastery, is a military air base, served by the 258 OVE (258th Independent Helicopter Squadron) flying Mi-24, Mi-35, and Mi-8 helicopters. Yuri Gagarin served here after having graduated from the Orenburg Pilot's School (1957–1960).

Pechenga Monastery

The Pechenga Monastery was for many centuries the northernmost monastery in the world. It was founded in 1533 at the influx of the Pechenga River into the Barents Sea, 135 km west of modern Murmansk, by St. Tryphon, a monk from Novgorod. Inspired by the model of the Solovki, Tryphon wished to convert the local Skolts to Christianity and to demonstrate how faith could flourish in the most inhospitable lands. His example was eagerly followed by other Russian monks.

Koshka Yavr

Koshka Yavr is a military air base in Murmansk Oblast, Russia located 25 km southeast of Zapolyarnyj and 83 km west of Murmansk. It appears to have been constructed as a dispersion airfield for Soviet strike aircraft in the event of military action on the Kola Peninsula.
