Verkhneuslonsky District is an administrative and municipal district, one of the forty-three in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. It is located in the west of the republic. The area of the district is 1,373.9 square kilometers . Its administrative center is the rural locality of Verkhny Uslon. Population: 16,641; 17,957; 19,894. The population of Verkhny Uslon accounts for 27.0% of the district's total population.

Sulitsa River

The Sulitsa is a river in Tatarstan, Russian Federation, a right-bank tributary of the Sviyaga River. Its length is 47 km and its drainage basin is 517 km². It origins 3 km west of Maydan village of the Verkhneuslonsky District and falls to the Kuybyshev Reservoir south of Sviyazhsk. Major tributaries are Changara, Mamatkozino, Klyancheyka. The maximal mineralization 500-700 mg/l. Average sediment in mouth per year is 113 mm. Drainage is regulated.

Sviyazhsk

Sviyazhsk or Zöyä is a rural locality in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, located at the confluence of the Volga and Sviyaga Rivers. It is often referred to as an island since the construction of the Kuybyshev Reservoir at Tolyatti downstream Volga in 1955, but it is in fact connected to the mainland by a road. Sviyazhsk was founded in 1551 as a fortress, which was built within four weeks from parts made in Uglich and transported down the Volga.

Markiz Island

The Markiz Island is a small island in the Kuybyshev Reservoir of the Volga River near Kazan, Tatarstan, Russia. The island, as well as the neighboring Uslon Islands, were formed in 1956-58 when the reservoir was filled from the larger island, also named Markiz. The original Markiz was a favorite recreation place for the Kazan inhabitants in the first half of the 20th century. The beach and the rest center on the island existed until the original island was drowned in the reservoir.
