Gatare, Rwanda

Gatare is a town of Rwanda, Central Africa, capital of the homonimous sector in the district of Nyamagabe (former Gikongoro). The location is {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:2|22|04.08|S|29|22|52.15|E|region:RW_type:city |primary |name= }}. It is located in the southern province of the country, around 2500 m. altitude on the mountains bordering the equatorial forest of Nyungwe. The territory is mostly covered by forest and is intensively cultivated by the population.

Nyanza District

Nyanza is a district (akarere) in Southern Province, Rwanda. Its capital is Nyanza town, which is also the provincial capital. Nyanza is a Bantu word meaning lake, which probably refers to a large lake to the west of Nyanza town.

Rukarara River

The Rukarara River (or Lukarara) is a river in western Rwanda that is a tributary of the Mwogo River, in turn a tributary of the Nyabarongo River. It is the most distant headwater of the Nile. The Rukarara has its sources in the Nyamagabe District. The Nyirabugoyi and Rubyiro rivers are its main headwaters, both rising in the Nyungwe National Park. {{#invoke:Footnotes|sfn}} The Rukarara is the longest of the streams that supply the Mwogo.

Murambi Genocide Memorial Centre

The Murambi Technical School, now known as the Murambi Genocide Memorial Centre, is situated in the Murambi district in southern Rwanda. It was the site of a massacre during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. When the killings started, Tutsis in the region tried to hide at a local church. However, the bishop and mayor lured them into a trap by sending them to the technical school, claiming that French troops would protect them there. On April 16, 1994, some 65,000 Tutsis ran to the school.
