Saldanha Bay

Saldanha Bay is a natural harbour on the south-western coast of South Africa, about 105 kilometres north west of Cape Town. The town that developed on the northern shore of the bay, also called Saldanha, was incorporated with five other towns into the Saldanha Bay Local Municipality in 2000. The current population of the municipality is estimated at 72,000. The place is mentioned in the first edition of John Locke's Two Treatises of Government as an example of the state of nature.

Malgas Island

Malgas Island is a small, 8.3 ha, uninhabited island lying in the northern part of the entrance to Saldanha Bay, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It lies about 800 m from the mainland in the Benguela upwelling system. It is rectangular in shape and flat, with the highest point about 9 m above sea level. It is known for its large breeding colony of Cape Gannets.

Battle of Saldanha Bay (1781)

The Battle of Saldanha Bay was a naval action that occurred off the Dutch Cape Colony on 21 July 1781 during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War. Five Dutch East India Company vessels were captured and another was destroyed by a squadron of Royal Navy warships under the command of commodore George Johnstone.

Sepia typica

Sepia typica is a species of cuttlefish native to the southwestern Indian Ocean and southeastern Atlantic Ocean. Its natural range stretches from Saldanha Bay, South Africa to southern Mozambique. It lives at depths of 2 to 290 m. S. typica is a very small species, growing to only 26 mm in mantle length. The type specimen was collected in Table Bay, South Africa . It is deposited at the Kobenhavns Universitet Zoologisk Museum in Copenhagen.

West Coast Fossil Park

The West Coast Fossil Park is a fossil park near Langebaanweg, Western Cape, South Africa, approximately 150 km north of Cape Town. The fossil sites of Langebaanweg have exceptionally well-preserved remains of fossil fauna that date to circa 5.2 million years ago. In this period sea levels were higher and many now extinct animals lived in the riverine forests, wooded savanna and along the sea coast near the present day Langebaanweg site.
