Kalmunai North Hospital is a government hospital in Kalmunai, Sri Lanka. It is controlled by the central government in Colombo. As of 2010 it had 413 beds. The hospital is sometimes called Kalmunai North Base Hospital.

Kalmunai

Kalmunai is a city in the Ampara District of Eastern Province, Sri Lanka. It had a total population of 106,780 as of 2011. It is the one and only Muslim-majority municipality in the country. When Muslims in Colombo were expelled by Portuguese in 17th century, they fled to Kandy and sought refuge with the king in Kandy. Then the king (Rajasingan 11) resettled these Muslim refugees in Kalmunai (8000 refugees) and Kattankudy (4000). Kalmunai was the Royal farm of the king.

Batticaloa Lagoon

Batticaloa Lagoon is a very large estuarine lagoon in Batticaloa District, eastern Sri Lanka. The city of Batticaloa is located on land between the lagoon and the Indian Ocean. Batticaloa district is flourished with three lagoons, such Batticaloa lagoon, Valaichchenai Lagoon and Vakari Lagoon. Among them, Batticaloa lagoon is the largest lagoon in Batticaloa District.

1991 Kokkadichcholai massacre

1991 Kokkadichcholai massacre refers to the massacres of minority Sri Lankan Tamil civilians in the village Kokkadichcholai near the eastern province town of Batticaloa. The massacre happened on June 12, 1991 in which 152 civilians were killed. The Sri Lankan government instituted presidential commission to investigate the massacre. The commission found the commanding officer negligent in controlling his troops and recommended that he be removed from office.
