Doğubeyazıt

Doğubayazıt is a city and district of Ağrı Province of Turkey, and is Turkey's most eastern district, the border crossing to Iran. Elevation 1625 m. Area 2,383 km². Population (2010) 115,354 (up from 73,794 in 1980) of which 69,447 live in the town of Doğubeyazıt, the remainder in the surrounding countryside. The town of Doğubayazıt is a settlement with a long history. It lies 15 km southwest of Mount Ararat, 93 km east of the city of Ağrı and 35 km from the Iranian border.

Mount Tendürek

Tendürek is a shield volcano located in the Ağrı and Van provinces of eastern Turkey, close to the borders with Iran. The elongated volcano rises 1,800 m above the Doğubeyazıt plain, south of Mount Ararat. The last known eruption was a gas and ash eruption in 1855. The original, Armenian, name of the mountain was Tondrak; the area around Tondrak is known as the birthplace of the medieval Armenian Tondrakite Movement of the 950s, which based its ideology on the Paulician teaching.

1976 Çaldıran-Muradiye earthquake

The 1976 Çaldıran-Muradiye earthquake occurred at 14:22 local time on 24 November. The epicenter was located near Çaldıran, 20 km northeast of Muradiye, in the Van Province of eastern Turkey. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.3 with a maximum intensity of X on the Mercalli intensity scale. The area of severe damage, where over 80% of the buildings were destroyed, covered an area of 2,000 square kilometres. There were between 4,000 and 5,000 casualties.
