Shireoaks Colliery

Shireoaks Colliery was a coal mine situated on the edge of the village of Shireoaks, near Worksop in North Nottinghamshire, close by the Yorkshire border. The Duke of Newcastle owned mineral rights in much of North Nottinghamshire and the original shaft was sunk in 1861.

Rhodesia, Nottinghamshire

Rhodesia is a village and parish located in the county of Nottinghamshire, in central England. The village lies 20 miles from Sheffield and is a part of the Sheffield city region. It was named after the erstwhile Chairman of the nearby Shireoaks Colliery, G. Preston Rhodes. Rhodesia is a small ex-mining village near to Worksop in Nottinghamshire. The village consists of just over three hundred houses, one pub, two shops, a school, a chapel and a village hall.

Netherthorpe Airfield

Netherthorpe Airfield is located 2 NM west by north of Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England. The airfield is in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. It was opened as a civil aerodrome in 1935. Netherthorpe is owned and operated by Sheffield Aero Club. The 18/36 runway at 382 m × 18 m ( ft ×  ft) is the shortest licensed runway in the UK, and probably in Europe, and is barely longer than some helicopter landing pads (such as Penzance Heliport which is 375 m × 45 m).

Worksop Town F.C

Worksop Town Football Club are a semi-professional English football club from Worksop, Nottinghamshire who play in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. The club claims to have been founded in 1861, which would make it the fourth oldest football club in the world today, behind Sheffield FC, founded in 1857; Cray Wanderers and Hallam FC, both founded in 1860. The club were based at Sandy Lane, but in May 2008 were forced to relocate to Hucknall Town's Watnall Road ground.

Steetley Colliery

Steetley Colliery is a former colliery on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border. Its story begins in the late 19th century when, in December 1875, a seam of coal was discovered. The site was bought by the Shireoaks Colliery Company from the Duke of Newcastle and this created a turning point in the history of Worksop: from an agricultural town to an industrial powerhouse, boosting its population and creating a prosperous future.
