Interesting facts about this location

Steinacleit

Steinacleit is a prehistoric archeological site on the west coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The site consists of an array of boulders which marks what is left of a chambered cairn, and possibly shows the site was overlain by a huge hall. There are ten large stone slabs surrounding the central mound. Folk legend of the Outer Hebrides states there was probably a battlefield near the location. The site is 50 feet in diameter and oval in shape.

Clach an Trushal (Scottish Gaelic: Clach an Truiseil, translated to English "Stone of Compassion") is the tallest standing stone in Scotland at 5.8 metres tall. It is sited in the village of Ballantrushal on the west side of Lewis.

SS Gracechurch

SS Gracechurch was a 4,318 GRT cargo ship built by William Doxford & Sons at Pallion on Wearside in 1930. She had nine corrugated furnaces with a combined grate area of 187 square feet feeding three 180 lbf/in single-ended boilers with a combined heating surface of 6,105 square feet . She was first owned by Gracechurch Shipping Co of Newcastle and managed by James, Muers & Co of Cardiff. In 1933 she was sold to B.J. Sutherland & Co who renamed her SS Peebles.

Barvas

Barvas is a settlement, community and civil parish on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. It developed around a road junction. North is the road to Ness; west takes the traveller to Carloway and the West Side; south runs the road to Stornoway. It is known as being the location of the highest concentration of Scottish Gaelic speakers in Scotland (74.7% of the population). In the early 2000s, controversy hit the area as one of Europe's largest windfarms was planned for Barvas Moor.
