Battle of Dunaverty

The Battle of Dunaverty was a battle and siege of Dunaverty Castle, Kintyre, Scotland in 1647. The battle and siege was fought between the Covenanter army under the command of General David Leslie and 200-300 Highland troops under the command of Archibald Og of Sanda.

Sanda Island

Sanda is a small privately owned island in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, off the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula, near Southend and Dunaverty Castle. Sanda can be seen from the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula and from the Isle of Arran on clear days. It is known locally on Arran as "Spoon Island" because of its resemblance to an upturned spoon when viewed from the South coast of the island.

Sheep Island, Argyll

Sheep Island is a small island situated off the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland. Sheep Island, along with Sanda Island and Glunimore Island, form a small group of islands approximately 3 kilometres south of Kintyre at grid reference NR733055. Running roughly north to south, the island is around 600 metres long, and is steep and precipitous along the west coast, rising to a maximum height of 41 metres .

1994 Scotland RAF Chinook crash

The 1994 Scotland RAF Chinook crash occurred on 2 June 1994 at about 18:00 hours when a Royal Air Force (RAF) Chinook helicopter crashed on the Mull of Kintyre, Scotland, killing all twenty-five passengers and four crew on board. Among the passengers were almost all the United Kingdom's senior Northern Ireland intelligence experts. It was the RAF's worst peacetime disaster.

Glunimore Island

Glunimore Island is an uninhabited island around 3 miles south east of the Kintyre peninsula, Scotland. It lies alongside Sanda Island and Sheep Island The island is just 200 metres long and rises to a height of 27 metres . There is a cave on the shoreline at the north. A drying reef surrounds the island to the north and east. More of these dangerous reefs litter the sound between Glunimore, Sanda and Sheep Island.
