Lumphanan

Lumphanan is a village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland located 25 miles from Aberdeen and 10 miles from Banchory. There is one pub in the village called "The MacBeth Arms", there is another bar (a former hotel) located three miles from the village centre named "The Crossroads Hotel". Known in the local area as "The Cross" this closed in 2011. Lumphanan is documented to be the site of a battle in 1057 AD, where Malcolm III of Scotland defeated Macbeth of Scotland.

Battle of Lumphanan

The Battle of Lumphanan was fought on 15 August 1057, between Macbeth, King of Scotland, and Máel Coluim mac Donnchada, the future King Malcolm III. Macbeth was killed, having drawn his retreating forces north to make a last stand. According to tradition, the battle took place near the Peel of Lumphanan in Aberdeenshire. Macbeth's Stone, some 300 metres south-west of the peel, is said to be the stone upon which Macbeth was beheaded.

Tornaveen

Tornaveen (Scottish Gaelic: Tòrr nam Fiann) is a district to the north of the small village of Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is on the Tarland to Aberdeen road and has approximately 150 residents. It used to have a small shop but this has closed in recent years. Its most notable historical event apart from being near the place of Macbeth's death was the landing of a German balloon in the late 19th century.

Kincardine Castle, Royal Deeside

Kincardine Castle, or House, is a Victorian castle in Royal Deeside near Aboyne in Scotland. It is 1 kilometre north-east of the village of Kincardine O'Neil. The castle was built in 1894-6 to Scots Baronial designs by Niven and Wigglesworth of London on the site of, and incorporating part of the earlier building on the site dating from the early 18th century. Niven and Wigglesworth were influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and this shows in the design. It is a category B listed building.
