Rural Studio

The Rural Studio is a design-build architecture studio run by Auburn University which aims to teach students about the social responsibilities of the profession of architecture while also providing safe, well-constructed and inspirational homes and buildings for poor communities in rural west Alabama, part of the so-called "Black Belt". The studio was founded in 1993 by architects Samuel Mockbee and D. K. Ruth, and is currently lead by UK-born architect Andrew Freear.

Black Belt (region of Alabama)

The Black Belt is a region of the U.S. state of Alabama. The term originally referred to the region's rich, black topsoil. But because of the plantation agriculture supported by that topsoil, in which the workers were initially slaves and then sharecroppers, the population of the region was and is overwhelmingly black.

Faunsdale, Alabama

Faunsdale is a town in Marengo County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 87. The town was named for nearby Faunsdale Plantation. Faunsdale is home to a medium-sized community of Amish Mennonites and the only Amish Mennonite community in this area of Alabama outside of Greensboro, Alabama. The town is also home to the only Amish Mennonite Church in the area, Cedarcrest Mennonite Church.
