Sonoita, Arizona
Sonoita is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Cruz County, Arizona, United States. The population was 818 at the 2010 census. The origin of the name of the CDP is the O'odham Ṣon ʼOidag, which may be best translated as "spring field". (There are several places that the O'odham call Ṣon ʼOidag within 200 km of this place, all agricultural spots. ) Sonoita has for many years been a popular place for wealthy Arizonans to establish vacation and retirement homes and ranches.

Winer Observatory
Winer Observatory is an astronomical observatory near Sonoita, Arizona in the United States. It is a private, non-profit observatory, operated by Mark Trueblood since 1983. It has been the site of a number of significant small telescopes and famous robotic telescopes. It has been the site of the Iowa Robotic Observatory. The facility also hosted Michael Schwartz's telescope, active in supernova patrols, until Tenagra Observatories opened a facility in the area.

Fort Buchanan, Arizona
Fort Buchanan, was a United States Army post founded in 1856 three miles southwest of present day Sonoita, Arizona in what is now called Hog Canyon. The fort was located on the east slope of the canyon and under constant attack by native Americans. It was officially abandoned in 1861 but during the American Civil War troops of the California Column occasionally manned the post. In February 1865 Apaches attacked and forced the small garrison to retreat.

Battle of Fort Buchanan
The Battle of Fort Buchanan, was an 1865 Apache attack on the United States Army post of Old Fort Buchanan in southern Arizona. Though a skirmish it ended with a significant Apache victory when they forced the small garrison of California Volunteers to retreat to the Santa Rita Mountains. Fort Buchanan was the only American military post conquered during the war against the Chiricahua.
