Jackson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2010, the population was 17,997. The county seat is Newport. Jackson County is Arkansas's 23rd county, formed on November 5, 1829, and named for Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States. Jackson was nearing the end of his second term when Arkansas was admitted to the Union in 1836.

McPherson Unit

McPherson Unit is a prison for women of the Arkansas Department of Correction, located in Newport, Arkansas, off of Arkansas Highway 384, 4 miles east of central Newport. Established in 1998, the prison houses the state's death row for women. The unit houses a campus of the Riverside Vocational Technical School. Originally it was managed by the Wackenhut Corrections Corp. , with the management contract beginning in July 1997.
