Eastman Lake

H. V. Eastman Lake is an artificial lake formed by the construction of Buchanan Dam across the Chowchilla River in the foothills of Madera County, California. A small percentage of the northwest area of the reservoir is in Mariposa County. Buchanan Dam was a 1975 flood control and irrigation project of the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

It comprises the Madera-Chowchilla, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census the population was 150,865. The county seat is Madera. The southeasternmost part of Yosemite National Park is located in the county's northeast.

Newton's Crossing

Newton's Crossing was a small settlement on the Stockton – Los Angeles Road in Merced County, California, United States, at a its crossing on the Chowchilla River. Its location marked the southeast corner of the official boundary of Merced County. Newton's Crossing was owned by William F. Newton who also owned a house and 160 acres of land there on the north side of the Chowchilla River and with improvements and stock, valued at $2260 in 1857.
