The Town of Lake City is a Statutory Town that is the county seat of, and the only incorporated municipality in, Hinsdale County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 375 at the U.S. Census 2000. The town's educational needs are served by the Lake City Community School.

Lake San Cristobal is the second largest natural lake in the U.S. state of Colorado. Located in the San Juan Mountains at an elevation of 9,003 feet, the freshwater lake is 2.1 miles long, up to 89 feet deep, has a surface area of 0.52 square miles, and holds about 11,000 acre feet of water. The town of Lake City, a few miles to the north, is named after Lake San Cristobal. The name San Cristóbal means Saint Christopher in the Spanish language.

It is located in the Uncompahgre Wilderness of the northern San Juan Mountains, in northwestern Hinsdale County and southeastern Ouray County, 8.75 miles east of the town of Ouray. It lies 2 mi west of Uncompahgre Peak. Matterhorn Peak, and its neighbor Wetterhorn Peak, 14,015 ft, are named after the Matterhorn and the Wetterhorn, two famous peaks in the Swiss Alps.
