Appling, Georgia

Appling is an unincorporated community in and the county seat of Columbia County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Augusta, Georgia metropolitan area. Appling was formerly a city but, with the 1993 passage of legislation requiring cities to provide at least three municipal services, Appling was not able to remain incorporated. It was one of 187 inactive cities in Georgia that lost its charter on 1 June 1995.

Columbia County is a county located in the US state of Georgia along the Savannah River. As of the 2010 census the population was 124,053 a growth of 38.9% from the 2000 census figure of 89,288. The de jure county seat is Appling. Appling is an unincorporated area, making Columbia one of only three counties in Georgia to have an unincorporated county seat. The de facto county seat, the location of Columbia County's government and courts, is Evans, also an unincorporated area.

McDuffie County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It was created on October 18, 1870, from Columbia and Warren counties' territories. As of 2000, the population was 21,231. The 2007 Census Estimate showed a population of 21,551. The county seat is Thomson. It is named after the South Carolina governor and senator George McDuffie. McDuffie County is part of the Augusta, Georgia metropolitan area.

Thomson, Georgia

Thomson, incorporated February 15, 1854, is a city in McDuffie County, Georgia, United States. The population was 6,828 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of McDuffie County. Thomson's nickname is "The Camellia City of the South", in honor of the thousands of camellia plants throughout the city. It is part of the Augusta – Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area. This city was once entirely owned by plantation owner John Langston.
