Elliottstown, Illinois

Elliottstown is an unincorporated community in Effingham County, Illinois, United States. Elliottstown is located at the juncture of E 600th Avenue and N 1900th Street, and the nearby juncture of E 600th and 1775th Street. It is in Effingham County. Elliottstown is in Dieterich Unit 30 school district. It is now little more than a cluster of houses. There was once a school in the town, but its building is now privately owned. A church building is also present and is privately owned.

National Road

The Cumberland Road (National Road) was the first major improved highway in the United States to be built by the federal government. The approximately 620-mile long National Road provided a connection between the Potomac and Ohio Rivers and a gateway to the West for thousands of settlers. When rebuilt in the 1830s, the Cumberland Road became the first road in the U.S. to use the new macadam road surfacing. Construction began heading west in 1811 at Cumberland, Maryland, on the Potomac River.
