Dewmaine, Illinois

Dewmaine was an unincorporated African-American community in Williamson County, Illinois, based around a coal mine. Today the area is almost completely non-residential and vacant land, though it now sits at the northern edge of Carterville. It was named in honor of Admiral Dewey and the USS Maine from the Spanish-American War. A post office by the name Dewmaine opened up 6 March 1901 and discontinued operations on 31 July 1931. It is now served by the Carterville post office.

Crab Orchard Lake

Crab Orchard Lake is a 6,965-acre (28.2 km²) reservoir in Williamson County, Illinois. It is the centerpiece of the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. It is fed by Devils Kitchen Lake and Little Grassy Lake, which are also within the National Wildlife Refuge. Crab Orchard Lake was created when Crab Orchard Creek, a tributary of the Big Muddy River in southern Illinois, was dammed in the 1930s for purposes of recreation and flood control.
