It was named for George M. Dallas, Vice President of the United States of America under James K. Polk. Dallas County is one of the five counties that make up the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School District is based in Adel, Iowa. The school district includes Adel-DeSoto-Minburn High School, also called ADM.
