The county is named for James Proctor Knott, Governor of Kentucky (1883–1887). It is a prohibition or dry county. Alice Lloyd College is a four-year liberal arts work college in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, United States. It was co-founded by the journalist Alice Spencer Geddes Lloyd, a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts and June Buchanan, a native of New York City, in 1923, at first under the name of Caney Junior College, as an institution to educate leaders for Appalachia locally. It became a four-year, bachelor's degree-granting institution in the early 1980s.

Pippa Passes is a town in Knott County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 297 at the 2000 census. The city is known for Alice Lloyd College. Pippa Passes was incorporated as a Kentucky sixth-class city on 1 July 1983, and is governed by a mayor and city council. In 2009, the mayor was Scott Cornett, who is also baseball coach for Alice Lloyd College. The police department operates as a combined unit with the college's security organization.
