Cushing Island, Maine

Cushing Island, or Cushing's Island, is a privately owned island in Casco Bay in the U.S. state of Maine. Part of the city of Portland, Maine, roughly 45 families live there seasonally. In 1623-24 English explorer Christopher Levett built a blockhouse on the island, part of 6,000 acres granted him by the English King. Levett left behind a group of settlers to carry on after he returned to England. But the naval captain and adventurer never returned, and the fate of the men is unknown.

Port of Portland (Maine)

The Port of Portland is the largest tonnage seaport in New England as well as a major seaport along the east coast of the United States. It is also the second largest oil port on the East Coast, processing 149,616,287 barrels of oil in 2007, mostly through the Portland-Montreal Pipe Line, and the largest foreign inbound transit tonnage port in the United States.

The Battle of Portland Harbor was a naval battle of the American Civil War, fought in June 1863, in the waters off Portland, Maine. Two United States Navy warships engaged two vessels under Confederate States Navy employment.

Portland Fish Pier

The Portland Fish Pier is a fishing pier located in Portland, Maine on the edge of the Fore River. It is a major hub for the commercial fishing industry, and is home to the Portland Fish Exchange, where over 20 million pounds (9,000 tonnes) of seafood a year are bought and sold. A fishermen's memorial is also located at the Pier. Due to the heavy commercial fishing industry presence, there is no ferry service at the Portland Fish Pier.
